Pharrell Face-Off: PETA to Confront Singer Over Fur Designs at Toronto Film Fest
Exclusive: PETA plans disruption at Neptune Frolic film premiere
Animal rights group alleges misconduct against musician and designer
Animal rights group PETA plans to confront singer Pharrell Williams at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) over the use of fur in his fashion line.
The move comes after PETA obtained exclusive footage of what the organization alleges is Williams wearing a fur hat during a recent interview with GQ magazine.
"Pharrell's excuse that he only wears 'vintage' fur doesn't fly with us," says PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews. "Wearing fur of any kind sends the message that it's acceptable to kill animals for fashion."
PETA plans to hold a demonstration at the Neptune Frolic premiere, a film in which Williams stars, on September 18. The group plans to confront Williams on the red carpet and demand an apology for wearing fur.
The allegations against Williams come as the fashion industry increasingly moves away from fur. In recent years, major fashion brands such as Gucci, Versace, and Michael Kors have banned the use of fur in their products.
PETA is calling on Williams to follow suit and ditch fur for good. "We hope Pharrell will join the growing number of designers who are choosing compassion over cruelty," says Mathews.
Williams has not yet commented publicly on the PETA allegations.
